How to determine which power rating of the sauna heater is proper for a particular sauna?

Accepted Answer

Power rating of a suitable sauna heater depends on the steam room’s size and insulation. As a rule of thumb, heating 1 m3 of the steam room requires 1 kW of power. When the capacity of the heater is too low, it heats the sauna slowly, does not provide enough steam, and might burn out faster. A heater that has excessive capacity does not cause problems if it is equipped with a thermostat and used correctly. Another important consideration is insulation of the steam room. In the case that there are uninsulated walls made of bricks, tiles, glass or logs in the steam room, an additional volume of 1.5 m3 per each such square meter of the wall should be added to the cubic size of the steam room. You can use our sauna calculator for determining the cubic size of the steam room. If you wish to calculate the cubic size of the steam room yourself, multiply the length by the width and the height in meters. Then calculate the surface area (m2) of uninsulated brick, tile, glass or log walls, multiply it by 1.5 and add it to the previous result. As a result, you’ll have your steam room cubic size (m3), which is the basis for establishing the proper power rating of the sauna heater. If the capacity falls between two different values, we recommend choosing the sauna heater that has a higher power rating.

In order to fill the whole space of the sauna heater properly, use smaller and larger stones. ● Sort out bigger and smaller stones First, take all the sauna stones out of the boxes and separate the smaller stones. ● Fill the sauna heater layer by layer Stack the sauna stones by layers – start from the bottom of the sauna heater and move towards the top. Stones should also be placed between the heating elements. If you first place sauna stones on one side only, the heating elements might deform or break. Start with bigger stones, and use smaller stones for filling the round parts of the heater and places where there is less space. ● Heating elements should not remain exposed Leave sufficient gaps for air movement between the sauna stones, and don’t place stones too tightly around the heating elements. Ensure that the heating elements are completely covered and not visible from the exterior surface of the sauna heater. This is important as throwing water directly on the heating elements might damage them. It will also reduce the quality of the steam. Water should evaporate from the sauna stones and not from the heating elements. The top layer of sauna stones should be as dense as possible – this is where the heat arising from below accumulates.

Olivine diabase is a heavy rock, and its approximate density is 3.5 kg/dm3. This prevents the accumulation of sweat on the sauna bench. ● Clean the steam room, the sauna bench and the shower room regularly with a disinfecting detergent. ● Empty the ash drawer before using the sauna stove. ● Light the fire with something small and flammable – for example, with a newspaper or small pieces of dry wood. Gradually add the wood. ● HIVE Wood and HIVE Heat sauna stoves may only be heated with wood logs. Logs with the length of 30 cm are most suitable for HIVE Wood 13/HIVE Heat. It is recommendable to use logs with the length of 40 cm in case of HIVE Wood 17. ● You can adjust the amount of oxygen in the combustion process by opening and closing the ash drawer. Ignition requires more oxygen, so it is advisable to keep the ash drawer open by approximately 10 mm. When the wood is already burning, close the ash drawer a bit, so that about 2–3 mm of the drawer remains open. Air flow of HIVE Heat can be regulated from the choke that is located above the door. ● Keep the furnace door closed during heating, and open it only for adding wood. ● Have your eye on the fire and observe when more wood needs to be added. ● When the sauna feels hot enough, it is ready for use. ● Continue adding wood for as long as you wish to keep the sauna hot. ● Avoid overheating the sauna stove. You are overheating your stove if the furnace casing starts glowing red. Overheating causes deformation of the metal, and in such case we are not responsible for the resultant damages. ● In case of overheating, close the ash drawer and the furnace door completely to stop the combustion process. Accepted Answer

A slight difference between the measured temperatures is completely normal. It derives from the intrinsic error of measurement that applies to the devices. However, if the difference exceeds 10–15 degrees, you should check the temperature sensor and the sauna thermometer. Check the following: ● Are the temperature sensor and sauna thermometer placed in different locations in the steam room where the temperatures actually differ? ● Is the temperature sensor too close to the sauna heater? Is it too close to the door? The best location for the temperature sensor is the opposite wall of the sauna heater, approximately 15 cm from the ceiling. It should not be placed close to vents or windows. ● Is the sauna thermometer functioning properly? If none of the causes described above apply, and the following problems persist, the fault likely resides in the temperature sensor and it requires replacing: ● the temperature difference exceeds 20 degrees ● the temperature displayed on the screen of the sauna controller changes abruptly or fluctuates constantly ● The message “Temperature input error” is displayed on the screen of the sauna controller The cable might also cause these problems. Take down the sensor and try connecting it to the main module with another suitable cable. If the sensor starts functioning properly, you’ll just need to replace the cable.

In order to use the controller, it must be connected to the UKU sauna control system. Choose a control system that complies with your preferences: UKU Local, UKU WiFi or UKU 4G. UKU Local enables one to heat the sauna from the wall-mounted control panel only. UKU WiFi and UKU 4G allow one to heat the sauna from the control panel, and also through the HUUM mobile app that is downloaded to the smartphone. ● Before using the controller, ensure that all model-specific necessary connections of the control system are established (refer to “Establishing the connection between the UKU Wi-Fi control system and HUUM mobile app” or “Establishing the connection between the UKU 4G control system and HUUM mobile app”). ● One short press of the button switches the controller on, and starts and ends heating. ● All UKU sauna control system models enable one to adjust the sauna temperature (40–110 °C). ● Press and hold the button for 10 seconds, and open the settings menu to select the desired heating time. You can choose between 3, 6, 12 and 18 hours. Default setting for heating time is 3 hours. ● To select the desired temperature, simply turn the button.
